Spring Blooms and Butterflies Await at South Coast Botanic Garden

Explore 5 Floral Displays and More in Bloom! Exhibit

March 29, 2024

South Coast Botanic Garden has a busy spring ahead with the opening of an in-house exhibit that culminates with more than 21,000 bulbs planted in preparation for a floral extravaganza. But there won’t just be one. Bloom!, opening April 1, focuses on five floral displays featuring the best Mother Nature has to offer, as well as additional photo opportunities.

When guests arrive, they will receive a map leading them to each location, where they will be prompted to use their senses to experience the area in a new way. In addition to the five floral displays and photo moments, the Bloom! map will lead guests to even more areas in the Garden where spring blooms flourish.

“The Garden is absolutely beautiful in spring, so we wanted to create an exhibit that adds to that and helps guests experience what's blooming in a fresh way,” says MaryLynn Mack, the Garden’s Chief Operating Officer. “We took our Courtyard, which can be a tricky place for some plants to thrive, and transformed it from top to bottom to ensure guests’ senses are immediately awakened. From there, they will ultimately be led to our Amphitheater Lawn where the exhibit culminates with more than 21,000 bulbs of climate-adapted species so that they will return year after year.”

As the season continues and more plants awaken, the experience will continue to Bloom! In fact, the team seeded a custom wildflower mix in the Amphitheater Lawn to ensure flora through June. The Dorothy and John Bohannon Rose Garden—one of the five floral displays—is expected to peak in May, which is perfect timing for those who want to visit the Garden’s fourth annual SOAR—Tropical Butterflies exhibit, which opens May 1.

“We are thrilled to be welcoming back this exhibit for the fourth year,” says Adrienne Nakashima, the Garden’s Chief Executive Officer. “SOAR has welcomed thousands of visitors over the years and has become a tradition for families, friends, schools and troop groups. We look forward to the arrival of the butterflies and to continue providing a space for guests of all ages to get up close and personal with these beautiful species. And the fact that guests can then leave the pavilion and further experience Bloom! will make his year of SOAR unlike any other.”

Bloom! is included with General Garden Admission, so it’s free for Members and up to $15 for non-members.

Tickets for SOAR are $6 for Members and up to $23 for non-members (the cost includes General Garden Admission).

Tickets for both exhibits are on sale now.
