Giant Trolls Are Taking Over This Garden, And It’s Worth the Drive

If you’re looking for something a little different, this might be one of those “okay, this is actually really cool” kind of outings.

About 45 miles from our area, South Coast Botanic Garden is hosting a larger-than-life outdoor art experience that feels straight out of a storybook. And yes, it’s just as fun for adults as it is for kids.

Meet the Trolls (Yes, Really)

This spring, the garden is home to Trolls: A Field Study, an immersive exhibit featuring 12 giant troll sculptures made entirely from reclaimed materials. These aren’t your typical sculptures either. Each one has its own personality and story, and they’re tucked throughout the garden’s 87 acres, so it turns into a bit of an adventure as you explore.

Kids will love the “treasure hunt” feel of spotting each troll, and honestly, it’s just as fun watching their reactions when they turn a corner and see one towering over the path. There’s also a subtle message woven in about creativity, sustainability, and how we connect with nature, which makes it feel meaningful without being heavy.

Make It a Full Day Trip

This is one of those outings where you can take your time. Walk the trails, bring snacks, let the kids explore, and enjoy a slower-paced day outdoors that still feels engaging. If your family doesn’t love crowded theme parks or overstimulating environments, this is a really nice alternative.

The Troll exhibit is included with general garden admission (and free for members), so it’s easy to plan a visit at your own pace. If you want a more guided experience, Troll Treks are available as an optional add-on.

Date Night Option: The Canopy Club

If you’re thinking kid-free, this might actually be the move.

The garden is also hosting The Canopy Club, an after-hours experience that turns the space into a hidden woodland-style dance party. Think DJ music, glowing installations, and a completely different vibe once the sun goes down.

Even better, it’s one of the only times you can see some of the trolls lit up at night, which gives the whole experience a totally different feel.

Upcoming dates include:

  • April 25
  • May 22
  • June 27

Why It’s Worth the Drive

We don’t always highlight things this far out, but this one checks a lot of boxes:

  • Unique and memorable
  • Outdoor and spread out
  • Works for families and date nights
  • Not something you see every day

If you’re up for a little day trip, this is the kind of experience that feels special without being complicated.
