That’s right. Solve a math word problem with no numbers thrown in.
At least not at the beginning.
Take this baffling 2nd-grade word problem, shown at right, that I recently came across on the internet. This particular problem has a big flaw, as we shall find out. For now, let’s use our numberless strategy to dissect the problem.
Step 1: Take out the numbers and the question.
Ask your students several questions to probe their understanding of the situation.
Step 2: Introduce back the numbers, one at a time.
Ask more questions each time.
Step 3: Put back the original question.
